Despite being a common appliance, many people have no idea how it works. So how does a dehumidifier work?A dehumidifier works like a vacuum cleaner; it essentially sucks humid air, removes the moisture from it and then releases the air back to the room.
A dehumidifier removes excess moisture from humid air. There are two ways a dehumidifier works; refrigeration and adsorption/absorption. Here is brief simplified step by step guidance on how a dehumidifier works.
1. Refrigeration method?
· The dehumidifier sucks moist air through one side of a machine with the help of the electric fan which draws the air inward

· The warm and humid air is passed through freezing cold pipes (these pipes are kept freezing cold using a circulating coolant). As the warm and humid air cools, the excess moisture turns to water. This water drips down slowly to a collecting tray that is located at the bottom of a dehumidifier. As the collecting tray fills up with water, the plastic float rises upward.
· When the collecting tray completely fills up with water it trips an electric switch which switches off the fan and turns on an indicator light. The indicator light is signal that the dehumidifier needs to be emptied.
· The air is now free of excess moisture; it is passed over a heating element that is quite similar to the heating system of a fan heater. The aim of passing the air over a heating element is to ensure it returns to its initial temperature.
· The warm and moisture free air is released back into a room through a different grille.
2. Adsorption/Absorption (Desiccant Dehumidifiers)
Although most traditional dehumidifiers work by refrigeration there is also an alternative way that is also just as effective-adsorption. This section will attempt to answer the question-how does a dehumidifier work (desiccant dehumidifier)?
This technique generally entails squeezing moisture out of humid air either through soaking the moisture into something (absorption) or picking up the water on another surface (adsorption). Here is a simplified explanation of how this type of dehumidifier works;

· The humid air is passed over a large rotating wheel that is made from highly absorbent material that can adequately absorb a large amount of moisture.
· After the excess moisture is removed, the dry air is blown back into the room
· The moisture-absorbing wheel rotates in a heated air space that is powered by an electric heating element that is inside the dehumidifier.
· The heating element ensures that the dry air is heated so that it can return to the initial temperature.
· The absorbent material is heated and this makes the excess moisture to transform to water which drips into the water tank
· When the collecting tray completely fills up with water it trips an electric switch which switches off the fan and turns on an indicator light. The indicator light is signal that the dehumidifier needs to be emptied
There are claims that this humidifier uses up more energy as compared to the refrigerant dehumidifier because additional heat is required to heat the moisture-absorbing material.
