Probable causes of water leaking

1. Crack in the internal tank- Leaks usually occur due to cracks. Over a period of time, water can react with the material used to make water heaters. Most manufacturers prefer steel.

The steel reacts with water, leading to corrosion. If you have recently noticed any rust colored water (usually brown), then probably the water leaking from bottom is due to corrosion.

2. Malfunction of the water heater component - The source of the leaking may be the malfunction of a component of the water heater. For instance, if the drain valve is not water tight, water may begin seeping from the edges of the valve.

3. Sediment build up - The main use of the drain valve is to drain the tank to remove sediments that build up. However, most people rarely make use of the drain valve. This may lead to accumulation of sediments consequently leading to damage.

What About The Water Pressure ?

4. High water pressure - The high pressure of water in your water heater may be the reason for your water leaking from bottom. The pressure exerts force on your heater, leading to cracks and consequently leaking.

Solution for the problem

There are several ways you can go in rectifying your water heater. You can decide to take the "do it yourself" approach:

1. Turn off the power to the water heater - Water and electricity are a very dangerous combination and can lead to electric shock if you do not take care. Also, if you have a gas water heater, you can cut off the gas supply to prevent accidents.

2. Turn off the water supply - Hot water can easily inflict burns if it comes in contact with your skin.

3. Determine exactly which part at the bottom of the tank is leaking - Check the cold water inlet and, also the hot water outlet, the drain valve, the temperature and the pressure relief valve.

4. If your drain valve is not water tight, tighten it with a pipe wrench. However, if it is totally damaged, you can screw on a garden hose cap to the valve to stop the water heater leaking from bottom.

So What  Is The Verdict ?

5. You can also check the pressure valve if it is tight. If not, tighten it with a wrench.

6. In case your tank has cracked, first drain all the water. You can then layer the crack with clay soil, cement or solder a metal to the affected area. This will ensure that the leaking stops.
